Headley Garden Project
In March 2024, we had the pleasure of completing a hardscaping project in Headley, Hampshire, that turned a client's garden into a practical and beautiful outdoor space. By constructing new sleeper retaining walls, elegant steps, and storm grey sandstone paving, we aimed to combine durability with style. The project was met with great satisfaction from the client, who will complete the final stages of backfilling themselves. This case study will outline the project goal, the scope of work, and the process behind bringing this vision to life.
1. Project Goal.
The primary goal of this project was to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space that would enhance the homeowner's enjoyment of their property. The retaining walls were designed to address any uneven terrain, providing a stable foundation for the garden and creating distinct levels for landscaping. The steps and path were intended to facilitate easy access throughout the garden, while the storm grey sandstone paving added a touch of elegance and durability.
2. Scope of Work.

Headley, Hampshire

Oak sleeper retaining walls
The standout feature of this project is the oak sleeper retaining walls, which were carefully constructed to provide both structural support and aesthetic appeal. Oak sleepers were chosen due to their robust nature and natural resistance to rot, ensuring they will remain a strong feature of the garden for years to come.
To ensure maximum stability, we installed oak uprights behind the walls, which were sunk 750mm into the ground and secured with concrete. This method offers enhanced durability, anchoring the walls firmly in place and preventing any movement over time. The walls and uprights were fastened using 7mm hex head fixings, ensuring a tight, secure fit that guarantees long-lasting performance.
Storm grey sandstone paving
In addition to the retaining walls, we installed storm grey sandstone paving to create sleek steps and a pathway, offering both practicality and an elevated aesthetic. The storm grey sandstone was chosen for its contemporary look, which contrasts beautifully with the rustic oak of the retaining walls.
Its durability means it will withstand the elements while maintaining its visual appeal. We used Easy Joint, a top-quality pointing compound with a smooth, polished finish, to complete the paving. This jointing solution is known for its weather resistance and longevity, ensuring the joints between the paving stones remain solid and intact over time.
Provision of guidance for backfilling
The client was happy with the outcome and decided to handle the backfilling themselves, giving them a hands-on role in the project’s final phase. With professional craftsmanship and the client’s finishing touch, this Headley garden transformation showcases a perfect balance of style, durability, and functionality.
3. The Process.
Site Preparation
Before any construction work began, we focused on thoroughly preparing the site. This included clearing the area of debris and vegetation to create a clean and level workspace. We assessed the natural slope and stability of the ground, ensuring that it was ready to support the retaining walls and paving. Any uneven areas were graded, and drainage considerations were taken into account to prevent future issues with water pooling. This crucial stage laid the foundation for a smooth and efficient construction process.
Planning and Material Selection
We collaborated closely with the client to choose the most suitable materials. Oak sleepers were selected for their strength and longevity, while storm grey sandstone paving was chosen for its clean, contemporary look. This planning stage also involved ensuring all materials were ordered to fit the project specifications, avoiding delays during construction.
Construction of Sleeper Retaining Walls
Installation of Uprights
Oak sleepers were used as uprights, sunk 750mm into the ground for a stable base, and secured with concrete. This provided a solid structure for the walls to be built upon.
Building the Walls
The oak sleepers were then carefully laid horizontally, each piece fastened with 7mm hex head fixings. This construction method ensures the walls stand strong over time, supporting the landscape and adding to the garden’s aesthetic.
Paving and Steps
Path and Step Construction
Storm grey sandstone paving was laid for both the steps and the path, creating a seamless transition between the different garden levels. The elegant grey tone provided a sleek contrast to the natural wood of the retaining walls.
Pointing with Easy Joint
We used Easy Joint to fill in the gaps between stones to complete the paving. This gave the paving a clean, finished look and ensured it would withstand weathering and remain intact for years to come.
