How we turned challenge into a feature
Creating a beautiful and functional patio isn’t just about laying paving slabs. It’s about bringing a vision to life. Over the last summer holiday in Bordon, we took on the challenge of transforming a garden patio with a unique blend of vibrant colours and clever design solutions. From storm grey to fossil mint, the mix of slabs created a dynamic, textured look that turned an ordinary garden into an inviting, relaxing space.
Would you like to find out how we did it? Let’s take you through this stunning journey showcasing a patio paving project in Bordon. Whether you’re looking for ideas for your garden or just love a good makeover story, this case study proves the power of our patio paving services.
1. Project Goal.
The goal of this patio paving project in Bordon was to create an inviting and functional outdoor space using a vibrant mix of paving slabs. The challenge was to incorporate a raised communal manhole cover seamlessly into the design while ensuring a durable and aesthetically pleasing patio.
2. Scope of Work.
Our first step was to meet with the client to understand their needs, preferences, and how they envisioned using the outdoor space. The idea was to create a visually appealing space practical for outdoor gatherings with a dynamic mix of colours. It is worth mentioning that we had to deal with a challenge: the raised communal manhole cover, which couldn’t be lowered, and the patio couldn’t be raised any further.
Rather than letting it disrupt the design, we turned this obstacle into an opportunity by creating a circular feature around it. This innovative solution allowed the cover to blend seamlessly into the patio while providing a functional spot for a decorative pot.
2.1. Colour Selection and Layout Design,
Storm Grey - modern, neutral base that adds depth.
Raj Blend and Raj Green - earthy tones that bring warmth and a natural feel.
Fossil Mint and Fossil Buff - lighter shades to brighten the space and create contrast.
Buff Blend - a unifying colour that ties the entire design together.
To achieve a harmonious yet dynamic appearance, we carefully planned the layout, alternating colours strategically to enhance the natural flow of the garden.
2.2. Ground Preparation and Foundation.
Before laying any paving slabs, we had to clear the area of existing debris, vegetation, and uneven ground. This was to prepare a clean, level surface to work on, preventing future issues like sinking or shifting.
Excavation and Sub-Base Installation
We excavated to the appropriate depth and then laid a robust sub-base of compacted hardcore to provide a solid foundation for the patio’s long-term stability and durability. Then we applied a solid bed of wet mix mortar across the prepared base. This method provided superior adhesion and support for the paving slabs, preventing movement and ensuring the patio stays level and secure over time.
2.3. Patio Paving in Bordon - Installation Phase.
With the foundation ready, we placed the paving slabs and carefully arranged the colours to achieve a balanced, visually appealing pattern. Our team planned the layout, ensuring no two identical slabs were placed next to each other, maintaining a natural, randomised look.
The raised communal manhole cover was a complex challenge, as we mentioned above. It couldn’t be lowered due to underlying pipework, and the patio’s level couldn’t be raised further without affecting the garden’s overall design.
To solve this, we transformed the manhole cover into a unique design feature. We shaped each slab to fit snugly, maintaining consistent spacing for a polished appearance. Creating a circular pattern around it made it an intentional focal point rather than an eyesore. Also, please note that this circular piece is fully removable, allowing easy access to the manhole when needed.
2.4. Jointing and Finishing Touches.
Once all slabs were securely in place, we used buff easy joint to point the spaces between them. This high-quality jointing compound enhances the overall look by blending seamlessly with the slab colours and prevents weed growth and water ingress, ensuring a low-maintenance finish.
After jointing, we thoroughly cleaned the patio surface, removing any mortar residue to reveal the slabs’ true colours. A protective sealant was then applied, safeguarding the patio against weathering, stains, and fading, thereby preserving its vibrant appearance for years to come.
2.5. Final Inspection.
Before the project was considered complete, as always, we performed a quality check, ensuring every slab was perfectly aligned, the jointing was flawless, and the circular feature around the manhole cover was fully functional.
3. Patio Paving in Bordon. Summary.
This patio paving in Bordon was all about combining style, functionality, and a touch of creative problem-solving. We ensured everything was perfectly level and polished, so the patio looks great and is built to last. This project was a brilliant example of how our creativity can turn challenges into unique design features. The client was thrilled with the result, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
