Stunning Garden Transformation
In May this year, our team at Yew Tree Landscapes undertook an exciting transformation project in Liss, Hampshire, turning an outdated and tired garden into a contemporary outdoor sanctuary. This case study explores how the team revitalised the space, highlighting key elements such as the new monsoon sandstone patio paving, lush Rolawn medallion turf, and elegant oak sleeper edges. 1. Patio Paving in Liss - Project Goal.
To Create a Cohesive and Inviting Outdoor Space
The primary goal of this project was to elevate the existing garden into a versatile and visually appealing outdoor space. We sought to create an environment that looked stunning and functioned effectively for various activities. By carefully selecting and integrating each element, we aimed to achieve a harmonious and cohesive design that enhanced the overall appeal and usability of the garden. The transformed space should invite relaxation, entertainment, and enjoyment while seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape.
2. Scope of Work.
The initial state of the garden was far from ideal. Two existing patios, a patchy lawn, and dwarf walls protruding from the porch created a cluttered and disjointed space. Recognising the potential for a beautiful outdoor living area, Yew Tree Landscapes devised a comprehensive plan encompassing several key elements:
Patio Removal and Replacement
We removed the two existing patios, making way for a fresh start.
Lawn Revamp
The tired lawn was cleared, creating a clean slate for a luxurious new lawn.
Redefining the Porch
The dwarf walls were removed from the porch, making it more open and inviting.
Path Installation
A new path was installed, providing a designated garden navigation route.
Porch Support
Upright posts were installed to ensure the structural integrity of the porch.
3. Process.
Patio Removal and New Installation
The first step involved the careful dismantling and removal of two existing patios. These patios, having seen better days, no longer matched the client's vision for a modern garden space. The removal process required precision to ensure that the surrounding areas were not damaged.
Once the old patios were cleared, the ground was thoroughly prepared for the new installation. This involved levelling the surface and ensuring proper drainage to prevent future waterlogging issues.
The transformation's highlight was installing a new patio using Monsoon Sandstone Paving in Sagar Black. This high-quality material was chosen for its durability and striking appearance. The slabs were meticulously laid out, with close attention to alignment and spacing, to create a seamless look.
The gaps between the slabs were filled with Easy Joint pointing compound to ensure longevity and a polished finish. This enhanced the overall appearance and provided a weather-resistant and low-maintenance solution.
Lawn Replacement
The existing lawn, which had become patchy and uneven over time, was removed. This process included lifting the old turf and preparing the soil beneath for the new lawn. Soil preparation is crucial for ensuring the new turf is well-established and healthy.
The soil was then aerated and enriched with organic matter to promote root growth and drainage. This step is essential for creating a sustainable and thriving lawn.
Rolawn Medallion Turf, renowned for its lush appearance and hard-wearing properties, was chosen for the new lawn. The turf was laid precisely, ensuring each roll was tightly joined to avoid gaps. This turf is mainly known for its resilience and ability to withstand regular use, making it an excellent choice for families and pets.
Decking Installation
A new decking edge was designed and installed around the retaining wall. This feature added a modern touch to the garden and provided a practical solution for defining the space. The decking was constructed using high-quality materials that complement the sandstone paving, ensuring a cohesive look throughout the garden.
The installation involved securing the decking framework to the retaining wall and ensuring the surface was level. Each decking board was carefully measured and cut to fit perfectly, creating a sleek and professional finish.
Pathway Construction
The new pathway was designed to enhance accessibility and flow within the garden. The layout was planned to connect different areas seamlessly while complementing the overall design.
The area designated for the path was excavated and levelled. A base layer of compacted hardcore was laid to provide a stable foundation. This step is crucial for preventing future settling or movement.
The pathway was then constructed using the same Monsoon Sandstone Paving as the patio, ensuring a consistent aesthetic. The slabs were laid precisely, and the edges were finished neatly to create a defined and attractive pathway.
Porch Reinforcement
The existing porch required reinforcement to ensure its stability and safety. After a thorough assessment, it was decided that new upright posts would provide the necessary support.
The old dwarf walls were removed, and new upright posts were installed. These posts were securely anchored into the ground and connected to the porch structure. The posts were treated to withstand the elements, ensuring they remained sturdy and attractive for years.
